Market and policy implications of the Scalability Assessment

In January 2023, BeZero Carbon published a first-of-its-kind Scalability Assessment for Carbon Removal, which evaluated the relative barriers to scaling for five different carbon removal methods. Following on from that analysis, this report puts the assessment into action and presents four deep dives on how the assessment could be used. This includes: a discussion of land, energy and ancillary value chains for BECCS and DAC; a closer look at policy and finance for Biochar and Enhanced Weathering; and, a deep dive on MRV (monitoring, reporting and verification) readiness for Biochar and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement.

Here are some key takeaways from the report

  • For BECCS and DAC, investment and policy focus needs to be concentrated on boosting carbon transportation and storage capabilities (there are six times as many DAC providers than storage providers), supporting the sustainability of biomass supply chains, and prioritising energy efficiency or renewable energy supply for DAC systems.

  • Policy support is needed for Enhanced Weathering. It is less urgent for Biochar as it is more mature and already gaining greater access to existing soil practice policy mechanisms.

  • For Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, targeted investment and policy changes are necessary to bridge the gap and help accelerate MRV practices for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement.
