Image of a government boardroom. Integrating carbon removals into the UK ETS

How should carbon removals be integrated into the UK Emissions Trading Scheme?

  • Joel Gould
    Senior Manager, Markets & Policy

  • The UK government has closed its consultation on integrating greenhouse gas removals (GGRs) into the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). As well as boosting demand for GGR credits in the UK, the technical details of the UK’s policy approach will influence those of other countries across the world.

  • BeZero Carbon strongly supports the integration of GGRs into the UK ETS and we urge the UK government to use existing expertise from businesses and organisations that are active in the voluntary carbon market to implement this change within the next two years.

  • We also recommend that the UK government considers integrating some international GGR credits into the UK ETS with appropriate guardrails, taking lessons from the approach of comparable nations such as Japan.
