Karina Melgaço is an ecologist with experience in forest ecology and dynamics. She has extensive experience in various tropical ecosystems, especially in the Amazon Biome. Her master's thesis consisted of investigating how the growth of trees in the central Amazon is modulated by wood density, local topography and water table levels. She currently works as a Plots Database Officer assisting the development and maintenance of the BeZero Carbon Plots Database. She focuses on harmonising ground-based forest data, and on estimating forest biomass and dynamics to provide context on carbon stocks across the world.
Before joining BeZero, Karina was experienced in assisting research and coordinating field expeditions from the National Institute for Amazonian Research in the Amazon Forest, Brazil. She also worked for several years on a tropical forest database at University of Leeds, in which she was responsible for harmonising and ensuring the quality of the data to be used on high-impact publications and research projects. Furthermore, she was responsible for offering numerous training sessions on data management, and for facilitating partnerships between research projects from everywhere across the world.
