BeZero Carbon expands presence and coverage in the US with new senior hire

  • Global carbon ratings agency BeZero Carbon has today appointed a new US VP for Ratings, further expanding the businesses international reach

  • Leading forester and nature-based solutions expert Dr Spencer Meyer joins the company to head up the development of BeZero’s ratings and embed them further into the US market

  • The voluntary carbon market (VCM) is projected to scale significantly in years to come, and BeZero’s world-leading ratings are essential to enshrine quality and build transparency in the market on a global scale

Global carbon ratings agency BeZero Carbon has today announced Dr Spencer Meyer as a new US VP for Ratings. Based in Connecticut, Meyer will support BeZero Carbon to expand its reach with US audiences and further develop and enhance BeZero’s world-leading carbon ratings.

This new hire builds upon an incredibly successful 12 months, which saw BeZero raise $50m in Series B funding, host its rating on major platforms like Salesforce’s Net Zero Marketplace and the ACX Abu Dhabi Exchange, and launch the first-ever Ex Ante rating which assesses the quality of carbon credits, before they have been issued.

Meyer, an expert in forests and nature-based climate solutions,  and adviser to conservation NGOs with over 20 years experience in the private sector, academia and non-profits, was previously Head of Science at NCX. His career has spanned working with the Highstead Foundation, Yale School of the Environment, The Nature Conservancy, Harvard Forest and the University of Maine, and as co-founder of Sebago Clean Waters – a coalition for water protection.

This appointment comes at a pivotal time in the development of the VCM. As companies in the US grapple with the need to decarbonise, the VCM has seen marked growth in the Americas - with an increasing realisation that the private sector must play its part to finance the climate transition. With the market projected by McKinsey to reach $50bn by 2030, companies worldwide are considering their net zero portfolios and environmental investments.

Meyer joins a global team of world-leading experts in climate and data science, finance and policy to deliver ratings-based risk analysis that can scale environmental markets and finance the net zero transition. This is the second US-based senior hire at BeZero Carbon this summer. In July, BeZero Carbon announced US-based Head of Forestry Ratings, Rishi Das.

Spencer Meyer, US VP for Ratings at BeZero Carbon, said:

“I’m really excited to be joining BeZero Carbon at what is a pivotal time for the development of the voluntary carbon market, working to build the trust and partnerships this ecosystem needs. Achieving net zero requires carefully balancing immediate action and objective risk-based assessments of quality climate projects. BeZero is poised to provide the critical market infrastructure to enable the VCM to reach its full potential.”

Tommy Ricketts, CEO and co-founder at BeZero Carbon, said:

“Solving the climate crisis is a global problem - and we need an international team that can grapple with the scale of this challenge. I’m delighted to welcome Spencer to help lead our Ratings team and build our US business at this crucial time for the market. Independent carbon ratings are essential to scaling the market and ensuring our customers have the project level risk analysis to make effective environmental decisions.”
