Landfills and industrial plants aren’t the images of choice in climate communications. But from a greenhouse gas mitigation perspective, projects in these ‘uglier’ sectors can have real climate impact. Methane in particular is a super pollutant, with a global warming potential approximately 30 times higher than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
Encouragingly, projects from the Landfill and Industrial Methane Emissions sub-sectors account for close to 10% of outstanding credits on the market. And with the UN recently approving the first methodology for landfill projects under the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism, demand looks set to rise.
