BeZero Carbon Removal Conference

Thursday 27th October 2022

We are currently at a watershed moment for our climate. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated in 2022 that the Earth stands a 50% chance of passing 1.5 degrees warming within the next five years. The IPCC also said that large-scale carbon removal of up to 10 billion tonnes is now “unavoidable”. The UK’s Climate Change Committee has forecast we need one sixth of all carbon emission abatement to come from carbon removals. Despite this urgency, we are less than 0.1% of the way to this carbon removal goal.

The challenge to scale carbon removal from the tens of thousands to the tens of billions is a monumental one. Neither the private sector nor the public sector will be able to accomplish this on their own. To enable this explosion of innovation and development, significant policy and funding support will be necessary from the Government and vast amounts of capital will need to be mobilised from private companies via the voluntary carbon market.

This conference will bring together leaders from policy, business, technology, finance and journalism to tackle two key questions: How can the voluntary carbon market be harnessed for the carbon removal transition? And, how can the public sector play a role in scaling the carbon removal industry.
